U15s stronger together

Our latest Red Conference fixture saw us take on Mackie at home on a nice sunny day, but with a strong wind blowing.
Ellon started the match facing into the wind and kicked off with a long kick bouncing into touch. Mackie won the lineout, shipping the ball to their backs. Ellon boys were alert to this and applied good pressure in defence managing to hold them back for several phases before they managed to find a gap to run through and score the opening try of the match. Ellon kicked deep from the restart, chased well and forced the knock on from Mackie on their 22. Ellon won the scrum and got the ball out to the centres to try and find the gap through. Ellon gained a penalty from the ruck, a quick pass to Caleb saw him take the ball at speed and run through the Mackie players practically unchallenged to score Ellon's only try of the match. The strong head wind kept the ball from getting over the posts to deny us the conversion. The match was then evenly contested with both teams holding their own and a good 12 minutes of play passed before Mackie ran the ball out wide to score their second. Mackie then started to catch the breaks and scored twice more before the half time interval.
Mackie kicked off for the second half with Ellon gathering the ball well and applying good pressure. Mackie stood up strong and held us at bay and we struggled to find that gap through. The bulk of the second half followed this same theme of good even pressure from both sides, but the luck of the ball was not with Ellon today and Mackie caught all the luck and scored against us on the breaks. We started to suffer from a few knocks and loss of discipline as the second half progressed. Lots of promising play during the match today with some great rucking over the ball and holding our own at the scrums. The line set up and decision making in both attack and defence were overall very good. Final score 5 - 51.
Points to work on from today, meet the opposition at the tackle and drive them back instead of letting them come and hit us, keep our heads up and look what's in front of us and and choose our play from that. We need to think about weather conditions and not panic and play too quickly from restarts and penalties etc. Everything is there guys and well within your capabilities. You performed really well and didn't let Mackie get under your skin too much today with loads of passion and aggression showing through, let's learn to channel it in the correct manner. Remember the best way to combat 'dirty' play is to dust it off and hit them hard to let them know you are a force to be reckless need with.
The score today did not reflect the game and flattered Mackie more than they deserved.
Well done boys, great team spirit and play today, keep those heads up and let's look forward to our next match.
