Gordonstoun 17/09/16

Ellon U15 squad travelled to Gordonstoun on Saturday for our latest Red Conference fixture.

The boys were all up for this match and raring to go. Gordonstoun kicked off to start the game with Ellon applying immediate pressure and forcing mistakes from the opposition leading to a few early penalties for Ellon. Some early scrums showed that Ellon were up against it and had to work hard to retain possession from our own scrum feed in. The first try of the match came around the 5 minute mark with run out wide by Jack, which was converted by Caleb. The match was very even for the next 5 to 10 minutes with each team holding their own. Ellon then broke through and were looking to score, but were denied by the referee’s call at the 5m line. The boys kept their heads up though and were alert and regained possession quickly from Gordonstoun’s scrum, shipping the ball back to Jack who then ran it out to the right corner to score his second try of the match. No conversion this time. Ellon gathered the ball well from the restart and built up several great phases of play with the forwards before getting the ball out to the backs who linked well allowing Jack to score his third try. No conversion. Half time score 0-17.

Second half was started with an Ellon kick, which was chased hard and quickly regained possession. A couple of quick passes got the ball out to Aiden, who ran through to score Ellon’s fourth try and converted by Caleb. Ellon boys started to tire a little allowing Gordonstoun back into the game resulting in the home team’s first try of the match at around 13 minutes in, no conversion. Ellon saw this a s a wake up call and responded well and fighting hard at the rucks contesting well for the ball and turning over the ball on several occasions. Some powerful forward runs saw the forwards open up some gaps with Brodie finally forcing his way through and over the line to score, no conversion. Ellon had suffered a couple of knocks throughout this physically demanding match and had to reorganise the pack going to uncontested scrums for the remaining couple of minutes. Gordonstoun benefitted from this at the last scrum of the match and shipped the ball quickly through the hands to their backs and ran through to score the final try of the match, no conversion. Final score Gordonstoun 10 – Ellon 29

A great game to watch with the boys playing very much as a team and deserved their win.
