Gordonstoun v Ellon

In the final away game of 2014, Ellon S2's made the trip to Gordonstoun for their first encounter against this team.

The game was played in wet and cold conditions on a very muddy and heavy pitch.

Ellon started the stronger of the two sides controlling possession for the first 10 minutes, however despite all this possession the lads were unable to score. The home side started to get more involved in the game with their bigger forwards taking the game to Ellon. However after turning over ball at a breakdown Ellon spread the ball wide to Kerr McCluskey who scored the first of his two tries which he converted. After the first 20 minutes Ellon led 4-0

Into the second 20 and whatever the Gordonstoun coach said to his players worked as they started this period the stronger of the two teams, winning the breakdown area at ease and putting pressure on the Ellon players who forgot how to compete at rucks or mauls. The hard work from Gordonstoun saw them score two deserved tries, one of which they converted. At the end of this 20 minutes they led 7-4.

Into the final 20 minutes and Ellon switched back on and started playing as a team again, with the forwards getting themselves back into the game and competing again with the opposition. This resulted in the forwards winning good ball at the breakdown. This allowed the Ellon backs more of the ball which they used to great effect against a tiring Gordonstoun side which led to McCluskey scoring his second try and Fitzgerald sealing the game with a well worked team try. Final score Ellon 12, Gordonstoun 7.

A very tough encounter for the lads who new they had been in a match and despite a lacklustre effort at the breakdown their overall defensive display for the 60 minutes was outstanding, which along with some great handling resulted in a deserved win.
