How many players do you need to make a game??

A Sunday in December, it must be a perfect day for rugby! On arrival the U13's were offered a rare opportunity to play on the first team pitch, however the pitch was more reminiscent of your grannies soggy Christmas vegetables than a rugby pitch! It was agreed with the U14s that we would both play on the 2nd team pitch with an earlier kick off instead.

Disappointingly, Deeside turned up with 10 players, so we provided them with 2 able assistants to ensure we had a 12 a side game. It was agreed we would play 2 fifteen minute halves.

Finally, the game commenced with Deeside kicking long, too long, which led to a restart scrum on the half way line to Ellon. Starting with intent the team managed to spin the ball wide for Euan to score down the wing.

The pattern continued on the restart with beautiful champagne rugby leading to the try of the game and captain Hamish dotting down under the posts.

The rest of the half allowed for more opportunities for fantastic tries to be scored, slick passing and awesome team play making a mockery of the weather conditions.

The second half allowed time for more excellent tries to be scored, however strong defence was also required with Deeside's strong runners travelling at speed through the middle. A particular shout out to Lucas here for fronting up in defence as some of the others held back.

Half way through the second half, after another successful team try, it was agreed to stop the game as Deeside had suffered two injuries. A disappointing end to the game, but with 62 points scored in 20minutes, the team have put in an awesome effort.

I am really proud of the team effort today, particularly after the mini break that we have had. On a day when the backline were on fire, it may be surprising that I have gone for a forward as player of the match, however this goes to Lucas for continuous body on the line efforts in defence and strong running in attack.

A special mention to the players who stood up and helped us by filling the gaps in Deeside, it is much appreciated and helps the spirit of the game. Also, thanks to Cathy for sorting out our hybrid snack at the end of the game!

Onwards and upwards to our final game of the year away at Garioch next week. Hope to see you all there! ?
