Ellon S1 headed down to Edinburgh for a 12:00 ko against President conference team Boroughmuir. Fantastic facilities at Meggatland, changing, club house and pitches.
Ellon started a little slow with a poor kick off, but gathered the ball in the ruck, used the phases and ran in a wide try for Adam Fowlie, set up by hard rucking by Logan Vavangas and passes from Orus and Dickie. Orus then converted from wide for a 4 0 lead. Boroughmuir hit back immediately using the tallest lad on the pitch and a cavalry charge. Ellon failed to close the space in defence and he ran in an unopposed score and conversion. Ellon retook the lead with Dickie passing from stand off but being tackled high. The resultant penalty was taken quickly and Orus sneaked in under the defenders. Orus also converted the try. Ellon maintained the pressure but before they could gather another score, the third was up.
Second third Ellon maintained a stronger defence, pushing Boroughmuir back and winning two scrums against the head. This set up Fowlie again for a score, but he needed a lot more physicality to get over. Orus converted. This was the only score of the half as Ellon were held up twice.
Final third and Ellon absorbed the pressure again, as Boroughmuir went up the middle with their bigger lads. Ellon moved back up the pitch and hooker Ross Stewart scored his first club try at S1 by crashing over. Orus converted. Form the restart Ellon attacked again but lost the ball, Boroughmuir put a kick in and it was misfielded and bounced perfectly into Boroughmuir hands to score under the posts!
Final score 8 - 16 to Ellon, although if Ellon had more composure, they would have scored a couple more. Great rugby from a number of boys, especially Ben at Stand off and James playing first game at fullback.
