U16s finish the whole league unbeaten

After last weeks call off for Wanderers and the U16s clinching the win by default, they were set their next challenge of completing the whole league unbeaten. A great win v Garioch ensured these guys go into the Christmas break on a high and hopefully, feeling very proud of themselves....

Before the match report - we have to say a massive well done to Duncan Whyte and Dylan Wood for making an appearance on Sunday. Duncan's had a crap year and was really good to see him as well as being keen to get back to the rugby. Woody had a bit of trouble over the weekend and was looking a little roughed up but also great to see him along as well to support his team mates. Well done to both of you.

Also - Oisin made his come back after the broken collar bone he picked up at RGC. We tried to play him slowly into the game by starting him on the wing but within minutes, he was reminding us all how much pace he has to burn with a great try saving tackle. Well played Oisin and good to have you back into the tea :-)

So the match started reasonably tight and in the first few minutes I actually thought they were in for a good test today. However, the forwards started to dominate very quickly and asserted themselves against the Garioch defence with a lot of power. This set the tone for the whole match with the lads seeming to realise it's much easier to play a team who is constantly on the back foot and always going backwards.

First try went to Will at 3 mins after the forwards dominated in the scrum and Will made a pick and go up the blindside. All of the forwards need a special mention here - I don't think they lost a scrum all day and even pushed Garioch off a high amount of their scrums also. Really good effort at the scrum - very well done to the pack here.

This was followed by Sam's first 5 mins later and another at 15 mins - Sam looked like he was going to have one of those days where he was determined to be everywhere on the pitch and this was to be the case where he also nearly got his his hattrick in the first half after a well weighted KFC from Dylan :-)

On 22 mins Sebastian went on one of his sniping runs and broke a couple of tackles to go in for his only try of the day. Seb played well the whole match and almost got several other tries as well as making some good ground and setting up a few tries for the team. On 29 mins Logan got his try and this was once again another example of the forwards being dominant at the breakdown, bossing their defence and making ground all the time for the team. Very hard to play against.....!!

Garioch managed to get their first try just before HT - it was 29-5 when we changed round as an excellent charge from Sam ensured the conversion was nowhere near...... :-)

The second half was just about to restart and we noticed Garioch had done their usual and started with an extra player AGAIN..... They scored their first 5 mins into the second half - this was on the back of the only one major error from the lads all match. The lads were defending on their own try line really well and managed to get a turn over with a great jackal and surging run from Gregor. However, instead of resetting and exiting from the red zone, when Gregor finally got tackled, he was a little isolated and once Garioch stole it they went through the hands out to the wing while we were still re-organising our defence. Hopefully another chance for the lads to learn from and to make sure we get clear of our try line if we turn it over.

Next we had three tries in very quick succession. Hamish got his try at 45 mins after a great running line, followed by a Garioch try at 47 mins and Wills second try at 48 mins. Will's try was after a great kick off and regather and it was great to see the lads starting to take the work we've done around the kick off at training to the pitch. The worked well to receive the ball all match but also pressurised Garioch every time we kicked off.

Ras got his try at 55 mins but it was all over by then. Garioch managed to get another try before the end to finish the game 46-24.

Honourable mentions as ever to the whole team but these lads get a mention here:

  • Aaron - really organised the defence well and made some excellent cover tackles to prevent tries.
  • Will and Tyler - Both were really dominant around the breakdown and some super attacking play in the close quarters.
  • Gregor - came on just before HT and really injected some extra aggression into the pack.
  • Hamish - Showed some good hands all game and made some super offloads to set up good attacking options.

But, our MOTM has to be Sam this week - even with no protection for the 8 in the scrum, he managed to get the ball away whilst under pressure and hassled their SH the whole match. With his couple of tries and just generally doing what a good SH does, he's well deserved for this weeks MOTM

Well done to All of the lads and as ever, all of the coaches are super proud of them.
