A game between the best two teams in the North at U16, came down to see who would top this Caley Cup Pool. Strong line defence against a tough fast Mackie team stopped Mackie's attack as they went with the wind first half. However they broke through off a couple penalties and some slow defensive realignment. Conversion missed. A couple minutes later Ellon could have scored but just taken into touch. A penalty and fast hands to the left wing saw new player Harvey Clark, just stopped before the line. From the breakdown, Jamie Brooks received the ball and scored. Conversion missed, led to a 5-5 half time. 5 minutes of both teams defending well, came to a very interesting last 5. A lineout 10 m out and Ellon caught and mauled, but peeled at the front and Ross Brown scored. A missed conversion would be costly.
Ellon defended well and turned over the ball, kicking to clear and chasing well. They got a penalty for hands in the ruck, which was moved 10m for back chat. As the kick was taken, Mackie charged it, which should result in another 10m and a yellow, however neither and the kick was retaken, just going wide. Mackie went quickly as Ellon expected time to be up. Mackie scored against a back stepping Ellon. They took the conversion well to win by 2. Man of the match to Ross Brown
That finished the game and the pool stages. Ellon and Mackie drew at the top 21 all. They also had a win a loss and a draw against each other. Next it went to points against each other which was the same, and finally Ellon took top spot on points overall.
Ellon have a home draw in the quarter finals against the "best looser" from the Midlands Tier 1 A.
