The U16 played Mackie in the National Cup quarter finals.
This was the best game of rugby Ellon U16 had played all season, and a game that really gelled the squad together.
In a very close start, Mackie scored twice early from errors. This led to a 0-12 score, although Ellon were probably the better team. Ellon then came back hard with a mix of phase play and passing and kicks and lineout wins. This led to Jamie Brooks crashing over for a try. Mackie then scored again against the play, before Jamie brooks again went over for a converted try by Josh Andrew. 12-17 was the half time score.
Second half Ellon really got away from Mackie and a strong defence was the basis for a great attack platform. Ellon getting their tactics right, really put Mackie under pressure. Ellon Scored with Ross Brown crashing over and Josh converting, and then Jamie Brooks completing his hattrick and Andrew converting again. Ellon took a 26-17 lead and continued to dominate the game. However Mackie took strength from their Scotland Fullback and he went on to score two late tries. It was 26-27 with 30 seconds left and Ellon received a 30m penalty. A tough one, but Josh Andrew went for the kick to win the game. The ball just went wide and Mackie moved to the Semi Finals.
Ellon U16 should be proud. It was an outstanding game and performance. Something that will bond the team and all players will develop from it. Although the team played brilliantly together, Jamie Brooks at tight head the whole game and scoring a hattrick gets player of the match
