A tough match for Ellon U14s which they contested to the very end

A tough match for Ellon U14s this weekend with an away game against the top team in the league - Deeside/Garioch (D/G).
D/G started strongly and within the first few minutes their No 10 had charged through to score the first try of the match. This was swiftly converted. Score 4-0.
Ellon U14s brought pressure from the start however, pressing hard to win turnovers and fighting to gain possession. An impressive ruck and turnover early on, saw Ellon No 5 Davinder Cabillo charge 10m towards the try line before being brought to ground by D/G's strong defence, who turned the ball over. A welcome return to Ellon U14s for Davinder. D/G then capitalised on their possession, spotting a gap in Ellon’s defence on the wing and scoring a second try (also converted), taking the score to 8-0.
Ellon’s scrummaging remained dominant this week and a D/G scrum near their try line was turned over by the strength of Ellon’s formidable front row; No 1 Taylor Signorini, No 2 Conor Donald and No 3 Euan Sinclair. Ellon U14s then began to gain some momentum with No 15 Spencer Booth booting the ball out of danger but unfortunately into touch. This gave D/G a line out on the halfway line. In one of several impressive rucks by Ellon, they turned over possession and a penalty by D/G led to an Ellon scrum. Ellon possession following the scrum saw Euan Sinclair make a strong charge for the try line through several D/G defenders, before passing to No 10 Chester Mulliner who found space and scored Ellon’s first try of the match. A tricky conversion was taken by Spencer Booth who secured the extra point to make the score 8-4.
A quick Ellon turnover gave Ellon possession again, however the ball was knocked forward, leading to a D/G line out. Strong rucking saw the ball returned to Ellon possession and No 12 Brodie Macalister making a charge for the try line. Under pressure from D/G however, he made a quick back pass which was neatly intercepted by a D/G player. Ellon continued to pressure the D/G ball carriers and succeeded in putting the ball into touch leading to another Ellon line out. Out the back of the line out D/G’s No 10 made another excellent intercept of the ball and sprinted for the try line, making an easy try. This was converted taking the score to 12-4. Within a few minutes, a series of handling errors from Ellon and massive pressure from D/G saw them win another easy try, this time on the right-wing. This conversion was missed, making the score 15-4.
Ellon, who had been struggling to make much forward motion when in possession, then gave away a line out to D/G which saw them once again drive the ball down the park towards their try line. This time Ellon’s defence fought hard for the ball, driving D/G’s ball carrier off the field for an Ellon line out. No 15 Spencer Booth then made an excellent kick to get the ball back into Ellon’s half. The ball was caught by a D/G player but he sent it forward, leading to an Ellon scrum which was won. Ellon’s new No 13 Max pushed hard up the field, making several metres before being tackled. He made a nice offload to No 10 Chester Mulliner who pushed over the try line and scored his second try of the match despite huge pressure from D/G. Spencer Booth then made another excellent conversion, taking the score to 15-8 at halftime.
Post halftime, it was clear that Ellon’s No 9 Dexter Marsh had conceded a leg injury. Gregor Lorimer stood in as scrum-half for the remainder of the match and put in a good shift supporting his team mates and getting the ball out to them.
From the outset D/G put Ellon under pressure, pushing the ball out of play and leading to a D/G line-out. A mishandled ball by Ellon then saw a scrum awarded to D/G and their winger run in another try down the right-wing. The conversion was made and the score was 19-8.
Play continued largely inside the D/G half with Ellon continuing to pressure for the ball and some strong rucking. Sadly, however, some missed passes allowed D/G to capitalise on defensive gaps on the wing, securing another try and conversion to make the score 23-8. Whilst Ellon’s fierce rucking continued with both teams contesting strongly for the ball, there were just too many gaps in Ellon’s defensive line and a further D/G break through saw another try to them, this time on the left-wing. With this one also converted, the score stood at 27-8.
D/G were now firmly in the lead but Ellon U14s did not give up. They made tackle after tackle and maintained pressure on D/G making them work for every metre made. However, missed passes again allowed D/G to capitalise on their possession, running the ball up centre field for another try and conversion. Score 31-8.
Ellon kept their heads up and fought for the ball and to make forward motion. Under huge pressure, No 4 Patrick Graham made a good pass to No 10 Chester Mulliner on the left wing. Spotting a space, Chester outstripped several D/G players as he charged down the left wing from the half way line. He couldn’t be caught and scored another try - making a hat-trick for Chester - which he then also converted, taking the score to 31-12.
Ellon’s determination continued. Two scrums were won by Ellon’s dominant pack and there was fierce rucking from several of the Ellon players as they fought for turnovers and to keep possession. D/G continued to find space on the wing though and scored another try and conversion despite a lot of pressure from Ellon. Score 34-12.
Ellon kept fighting and another Ellon scrum win saw them take the ball to their 10 metre line. No 12 Brodie Macalister pushed forward for the try line before, under massive pressure, popping the ball to No 6 Fraser Leuchars. Fierce defence from D/G saw Fraser unable to make much forward motion. He made a nice pass to No 10 Chester Mulliner who found space, breaking through to secure his 4th try of the game. This one was converted by No 15 Spencer Booth to take the score to 34-16.
A successful Ellon scrum saw Ellon putting pressure on D/G but they came back strongly with their No 10 gaining possession and running in their tenth try. This one was converted and the score was 38-16. Ellon U14s refused to give up and in the final minutes of the game their fierce rucking, which had been a theme of the match, turned the ball over once more. No 12 Brodie Macalister took possession and couldn't be stopped, crashing in a try right between the posts. Spencer Booth’s fourth conversion of the match took the score to 38-20 and the final whistle blew.
Congratulations to D/G on their hard-fought win. It was another thrilling match to watch and once again Ellon dominated the scrums and contested strongly for possession in the rucks. Overall the teams were better matched than the score suggests. D/G made greater use of their possession and some gaps in Ellon’s defence allowed them a few soft tries. D/G interceptions were brilliant and Ellon U14s certainly have some work to do on their short passes to prevent (and emulate) this. However it was exciting to watch the Ellon team never giving up and fighting for every point right until the end. Their commitment to the game and each other, even in defeat, was clear to see.
