The team is a mix of young lads, fresh from the U18 squad last year, players wanting to push for first team positions and the gaps filled in by older players to make sure they all get a game. The game was fairly close for 70 minutes with both team exchanging tries and penalties. Ellon ran in four tries, three from Jordan Tijou and one from substitute Fraser Morrison, Jamie “teeth” Simpson got man of the match for an outstanding performance. With 10 minutes left there was 2 points in it, but match fitness showed as Ellon were clearly exhausted and Deeside maintained their pressure to score 3 late converted trys to win 24 – 45. However a special mention goes to Matt Pearce for covering the width of the pitch to make a try saving tackle to hold the Deeside winger up, and to Callum Cruickshank for playing most of the game with a later diagnosed fractured cheekbone. Gareth Kemp the Team Manager for the day said “It is great to get this team up and running again”. “There is a need for a seconds team to challenge the firsts players for positions and to bring on the young lads and those coming back from injury”. “This is the first time in over 1½ years Ellon have put out three senior teams on the same day (Firsts, Seconds and U18)”.
Game this Saturday away to Aberdeenshire Third team.
