Match Report

A fine morning for rugby where we hosted Wands for our 2nd league game of the season. Change of venue due to their waterlogged pitches.

We got off to a very fast start scoring in our opening play. We were always ahead in the game and pulled away for a comfortable 13-5 win. For a brief period in the middle of the first half Wanderers clawed back at the scoreboard and did get within a few trys from us. Due to low opposition player numbers we ended up lending them 1 player and then 2 for a short period. The Ellon players that swapped across also got on the scoreboard and got involved with a huge amount of work.

We are doing well at the new kick off rules and were piling on the pressure, a few we recovered back, and one resulted in a try direct from kick off. We moved the ball wide and quickly getting a lot of easy scores in the wider areas. However, there is also a nice spread of trys between the players/positions and we had some brilliant solo efforts in the middle with hard straight lines bursting through. Rucking from both teams was really good and there weren’t too many infringements.

Lowlights for us are not everyone is comfortable in defence and tackling low, some sideways running (for a brief period) and stepping back into oncoming traffic! The highlights are the way in which we helped the opposition, our support play, quick/clean/legal rucking, and how comfortable we are on the ball and passing down the line. For the most part we are making good decisions on the pitch, and if we mess it up, there's no panic, quick ruck, and we go again! Superb work today and brilliant to watch ?

Debutant
Robbie playing his first competitive game for us today. He’s only been with us a few weeks, came on the 2nd half, got involved with a lot of the action, and did not look out of place at all! He got absolutely steamrollered at one point, got up and went again ?. Well done Robbie ?

Player of the Match
Cameron Mac was involved in a lot of our plays today and was instrumental in either scoring, absorbing defenders, or moving the ball along quickly to set up trys outside. Great in defence and was sending people backwards. Very solid performance all round and without a doubt our best “decision maker” today.

Most Improved Player & Best Clubman
Double award and plaudits for Leo today! He was on the team sheet for a half today and when asked he was more than happy to help Wanderers. He played in the middle of the park for Wands and at times was one of the few players willing to take on the ball and make a run. He was a live wire and ended up playing another ¼ for Wands and the final ¼ for Ellon. We were a bit oversubscribed with wingers today and his unselfish decision to help out meant that he got the full 30 mins playing, made a big contribution to both teams, and we as a coaching team got to see him play in a few different positions.

Thank-yous
Finlay and Jamie for helping Wanderers out and also running hard at your fellow teammates!
