Ellon U16 took on Kirkcaldy in the Bowl Final at a sunny Perthshire rugby club. Both teams looked to play good fast rugby in the perfect conditions.
Ellon received the kick off and looked to attack hard and fast. Taking two phases and the moving the ball wide, Fraser Chalk ran in an early try on 1 minute! Conversion narrowly missed by Ben Dickie. Score was double 7 minutes later, after some serious pressure absorbed by Ellon and turned over. Reese Melling used great physicality to reach the line with 3 Kirkcaldy boys tackling him. Ben missed the conversion by millimetres as he hit the crossbar! Kirkcaldy had the ball for the next 10 minutes but again Ellon defence was strong and held them back. Fraser Chalk took the ball out wide, running 40 meters to score and converted by Ben Dickie for 17-0.
8 minutes later Chalk scored his hat trick in a well worked move using backs and forwards. Converted by Ben. Adam Kinmond then took a team yellow for repeated penalties around the break down. Ellon just couldn’t adapt to the referees interpretation, something they must learn to do for next season. 5 minutes of pressure and Ellon made some big tackles to keep Kirkcaldy at bay. Stevie Gray then picked up a harsh yellow for a tackle deemed illegal, and Ellon were down to 13! However as Kirkcaldy tried to attack, Ellon regained the ball and released Fraser Chalk again to run 50 meters to score his fourth try of the half. Converted by Ben to make it 31-0 at half time.
Kirkcaldy scored first in the second half while Ellon were down to 13 still, but as the Ellon lads came back on, so there strength returned. 1 more try to Reese Melling led to a final try in the last minute to Stevie Gray, converted by Ben Dickie. Final score was 43-7 to Ellon.
Man of the match to Fraser Chalk! While Ben Dickie received support player, however all 16 lads played a huge part in the game.
