Ellon earn bonus point in convincing win over Orkney at the Meadows

By Jack Calvert

Ellon got back in the Caledonia League 1 running with a win over Orkney RFC at the Meadows.

The home side earned a bonus point after scoring five tries through Kieron Dalgarno, Jack Calvert, Hamish Dalgarno, Andrew Ovenstone and Stuart Hackett, leaving the final score at 31-10.

Despite the scoreline the islanders were by no means a pushover and looked to be the better side for much of the game.

Orkney captain Alan Brown said: “This was a tough game for us. We played well for 60 minutes but then our fitness started to let us down.

“It’s been difficult for us to get a consistent team together; we’ve had a few injuries. Hopefully we can get things sorted for next week’s game against Highland.”

The away side also had second row Derek Robb sin-binned for the second game running, something which had an effect when Ellon began to turn the tide.

Ellon forwards coach Steve Bucknall summed up the afternoon, saying: “We were a bit soft for the first 60 minutes but we got into the game after that. Our back row functioned well throughout the afternoon and, despite Orkney’s efforts to slow down the ball, we finished strongly.

“We had a few notable performances, Hamish Dalgarno played well at full back - in his first home appearance - and Keiron Dalgarno made a welcome return to the back row. Ryan Morrice also had a great game and was unlucky not to score after a scintillating break in the closing stages.

“We got the better of Orkney today but it will be a completely different game when we travel north. We’ve got to keep on developing as a team and pushing ourselves.”

Ellon president Richard Porteous was pleased with his side’s work, adding: “I’m happy with the win and the bonus point today. Everyone’s been working hard in the paddock and the coaches are doing an excellent job. We just need to keep going now, making the right decisions and getting the best possible team on the pitch.”

The only real drawback for the Meadows side was an injury sustained to in-form hooker Cedric Porche. The Frenchmen went off with a suspected dislocated elbow and will be out indefinitely.

Ellon hope to continue their good form when they travel to St Andrews University on Saturday, September 15.
