After a month without a game, Ellon First XV were desperate for a game.

Having had great numbers at training the past few sessions, including a top scrummaging session taught by Ellon past Captain Bobby Kenny, the boys were up for the game in Banchory. Deeside had much improved since the last meeting a couple months back, with a few new players and some good coaching, Ellon were expecting a good tough game.
With a full 21-man squad for the first time in a while, Ellon arrived to a still, cool and dry Banchory. Pitch was in excellent condition for a flowing game.
Ellon kicked off and immediately went on the attack, using a mix of forwards drives and backs moves. For 20 minutes Ellon had most of the possession, but no score to show as Deeside just kept Ellon at bay. Deeside then had several penalties as Ellon adjusted to Deeside’s attacking. Ellon defended well and stole ball at the lineout, clearing their lines with accurate kicking. On the 25th minute Ellon had a good scrum, ran the ball through the phases to the left wing and back to the right for Hayden Millar to score. 0 – 5. Ellon then attacked and from a penalty kicked to touch. Mauling from the lineout they knocked on in the subsequent phases. Rory Yuill made a 20m break and from the next scrum, Douglas Sharp went under the posts for a typical try, converted by Stewart Cruickshanks. 0 – 12. Doug then went on a 30m break, and Ellon got a penalty from the next scrum, kicked by Stewart Cruickshanks for a half time score of 0 – 15. Second half Ellon stepped up another gear, especially in the scrum. On 50 minutes, Ellon moved the ball one way and back to the other wing, in a similar move to an earlier try, for another backs try, this time to debutant Henry Cole. 0 – 20. The following kick off went straight out and Ellon scrummed on the half way. Driving Deeside back, when the ball went into the backs, Rory Yuill again went in for a score under the posts bringing up the bonus point, converted by Stewart Cruickshanks. 0 – 27. From the next line out on 6m, Ellon caught the ball and drove, pulling in the Deeside players to create a maul. Although the Deeside forwards tried to step back to create an obstruction ruling, all it did was create an unopposed 6 m drive over the line for a forwards try to Steven Atkinson, excellently converted by Stewart Cruickshanks again. 0 – 34. Deeside then twice held Ellon out on their line, and in the last minute, Ellon were caught out as Deeside went over of an unconverted try. Final score 5 – 34 and a bonus point win for Ellon, who now have one game left this half of the league. They play Shetland on 7th January in the final game, before the league split.
A fantastic result for the Ellon team who have been working so hard this past few weeks. Coaches and players alike, all topped off with a great scrummaging performance in the game, after a full scrum session on Thursday. Man of the match went to Rory Yuill, however a special mention to Henry Cole, scoring on his debut as he stepped up from the U18 into the First XV this weekend!
