ELLON turned in their most impressive performance of the season with a five-try 32-0 home rout of Edinburgh University in National League Division 1 on Saturday.
The one-sided game enabled the side from The Meadows to move into fourth place in the table.
Coach Mike Avis said: “We worked hard for this one, looking more like a promotion seeking side.
“Our control in the contact areas was good. I was particularly impressed by flanker Jack Calvert and prop Bobby Kenny, who were everywhere.” Todd Patterson, the scrum half, snaffled two tries from under the noses of the his pack, which was driven on relentlessly by him as Ellon took control through tries from flanker Glen Douglas and Patterson to which centre Mark Ryan added a penalty to lead 13-0 at half-time.
The match got off to the worst of starts when home lock Craig Farquhar fell awkwardly at a lineout, injuring his neck.
As a consequence of the fall an ambulance was called, resulting in the game being switched to an adjoining pitch while Farquhar was treated by a local doctor and the emergency services whose response time was less than 10 minutes.
Avis was able to report that Farquhar was making a full recovery, but would have a sore neck for a while.
In the second half, Ellon maintained the pressure adding three tries through Kenny, Patterson and Ryan, who also kicked two conversions.
Patterson can also lay claim to having scored his brace of tries on two different pitches on the same afternoon.
He said: “The performance has been coming for a while. I don't really care where I score my tries.”
