Last weekend saw Ellon First XV take the local derby in Caledonia 1 against Aberdeen Wanderers, in front of a great crowd at the Meadows.

Starting the same way Ellon have for the past few games, the opposition scored early from the first phases off the kick off. 2 minutes in saw Wanderers score an unconverted try. This was followed up 3 minutes later by a penalty for 0-8. Sean Aiken was first to score for Ellon as started to move the ball well making use of their mobile big forwards and young backs. James Halmshaw then scored a solo try as be brushed away Wanderers forwards and reached for the line. So far conversion had been missed, making the score 10-8 to Ellon. There was a period of 20 minutes when both sides played great rugby, but couldn’t break the try line. Until Captain Brad Fraser scored and Ross Grieg converted for 17-8 half time. Wanderers took advantage of the kick off again and scored early on before Ryan Notton scored form the wing, 22-13. New lad Dylan cooper scored, followed by Nicki Fraser with both converted. Wanderers score a late penalty to make the final score 38-16. Bonus point win for Ellon, while restricting Wanderers. Ellon move to 5th in the league and face 2nd placed Dunfermline away this Saturday. Dunfermline are only two points above Ellon, so making it a good game.

Youth Section all had a rest from the Lancer Conference, but played a series of cross conference fixtures again Shogun Conference team Highland. Looking to show the SRU that they can compete in that league, Ellon more than showed it over the weekend. U18 played Saturday and dominated the game, winning 44-10. The remainder of the games were Sunday, with U16 winning 46-12, U15 lost 25-35, U14 11-29 and U13 10-23. These results showed Ellon can compete at this level and should hopefully be allowed to go up next season.

This weekend Ellon Youth play Deeside/Garioch combined away as they return to the conference.
