Ellons cup campagin off to a soild Start

Saturday the 25th of August saw Ellon 1st XV line up for their first competitive game of the 2012/13 season. Unusually the first game of the season was a Cup match against local team Mackie.

Cup game or not Ellon came out with only one thing on there minds, Winning. From the start whistle it was clear that Ellon were in control of the game, However Mackie managed to hold Ellon off first 30 mins before new recruit Greg Willets cutting up Mackies backs to get over the white line in the 34th min. for the next 10 mins before half time Ellon spurred forward with Jack Calvert making a 60 meter breakaway try
(37), and Ewan Muntch forcing his way over in the 39 min. Andrew Ovenstone converting 2/3.

Half time 19-0

The second half saw a much stronger half from Mackie coming out hard against the home team. Ellon were camped in there half for the majority of the half with the wind against them struggling to clear their line. Inevitably Mackie managed to get over the white line twice in close succession. Reaching the end of the game Ellon stepped up one last gear, with some solid rucking from the forwards and excellent line control from the backs, Eddie Addy got over the line closing off the game with a 4th try for Ellon.

Final score 24-10

A strong win for the Ellon boys! They looked solid in set and in open play. For the first game of the season it is looking promising!

Next week Mackie round two, league game Away!! Can Ellon make it a double header?
