Ellon Hit Back To Score Easy Win

Published: 20/09/2010 (www.pressandjournal.co.uk)

ELLON did all that was necessary to ease past a poor, but spirited Irvine at Marress Park, scoring five tries in a 27-14 win to pick up a welcome try winning bonus point which keeps them on track for promotion in National League 1.

The Aberdeenshire side, however, had to rally from a 14-10 deficit at half-time in a game badly affected by a strong, gusting wind.

“We made hard work of playing into the wind, but once we got into our stride there was only ever going to be one outcome,” said head coach Mike Avis, who was pleased with the result, but not entirely happy with the performance.

“There are still aspects of our play which concern me, including learning how to step up the momentum,” he said.

Ellon were again indebted to leading tryscorers winger David Yuill and scrum half Todd Patterson who each grabbed a brace, although it was Jack Calvert who was probably the most pleased after scoring his first touchdown for the club.

Rory Yuill also made his first start this season in a solid, but unspectacular showing from the men from The Meadows.
