ELLON lost out for the third time in a row in National League 1, leaving head coach Mike Avis to rue missed opportunities in the narrow, but exciting 34 - 27 reverse at Greenock.
''We played exceptionally well, but once again were unable to put away our chances, combined with the us missing vital tackles, although it was a great game of rugby to which we made a big contribution. If we can learn to be more patient and couple it with composure we'll make progress,'' said a frustrated Avis.
The win took Wanderers to the top of the division, but were severely tested by the Meadows side who surged back from being 18 - 3 down at the interval to score three tries to come within a try and a conversion of a draw.
Ellon's two top try scorers winger David Yuill and scrum half Todd Patterson both got touchdowns in the second half rally, while centre Kyle Bayliss notched one of his own.
Fellow centre Mark Ryan was a reliable as ever, kicking the remaining 12 points for the visitors.
''There were lots of positives to take from the game, including a desire to win. It's a performance on which we can build,'' said Avis who has not given up on a promotion place for his charges, but acknowledges the winning process must start with a win against Langholm at home on Saturday.
