Ellon make it easy for their opponents

Published: 04/10/2010

ELLON failed to learn the lessons of the defeat at East Kilbride the previous week, slipping up 35-19 at home to an organised Garnock, who on this form could well be in the promotion mix in National League 1.

The Aberdeenshire side made it easy for the visitors, handing Garnock a gift in the opening minute when full back Alex Macdonald threw a wild pass from inside his own 22 for his opposite number Gareth McCrorie to hack through and touch down.

Ellon scored one of their own right from the kick-off when centre James Kirk-Williams crashed over, only to surrender a penalty, giving the Aryshire side a 13-5 lead to the annoyance of home coach Mike Avis.

“From that point we were always chasing the game against a side who were handy, but there to be beaten. Once again we created chances, but failed to take them.

“We have an attitude problem, which we will need to work on, although I can’t fault the team for effort, even if I can accuse them of not controlling the break downs,” said an exasperated Avis.

Once Garnock had grabbed the early initiative they used the strong wind to pin back the home side, scoring further tries through scrum half Paul McRorie and winger Jordan Taggart to ensure a half-time lead of 30-5.

An immaculate display of place kicking from stand off Rory Walker, who kicked all three conversions, added another penalty to put the game out of reach.

Ellon raised the tempo in the second half with the wind at their backs, but were too predictable, enabling the visitors to run down the clock. They were not unduly worried about conceding two tries to scrum half Todd Patterson, who was outstanding, and flanker Glen Douglas both of which were converted by stand off Chris Doak.

Garnock had the last word, scoring in the dying seconds through number eight Stewart Wilson to give them a welcome try bonus, even if it came gift-wrapped.
