MUST do better is the order from Ellon coach Mike Avis as his side bids to get back to winning ways at Greenock Wanderers tomorrow.

The Aberdeenshire side’s decent start to the campaign has come off the rails in recent weeks with back-to-back defeats and Avis believes every player needs to improve if the club is to get a result at a Wanderers side which is sitting second in National League Division 1.

He said: “We are leaking early tries in games which is killing us and when you are chasing a game you leave yourselves exposed which has been our problem in the last two matches.

“The defeat to Garnock last weekend summed up our problems perfectly. We literally handed them their first try and from that point we were always chasing the game against a side who were handy, but there to be beaten, especially on our own patch.

“I could take a bit of slackness if we responded, but once again we created chances and failed to take them.”

Avis will ring the changes in his side for the trip with Mark Ryan brought in to play at centre, while Alex McDonald will move to the wing.

Mike Evans will also feature in the back row for what Avis predicts will be a difficult game for his side.

He said: “We know what to expect as Greenock are up challenging on merit, but if we can keep better control in the contact areas and improve our ball retention we will be in with a shout.

“Most of all, it’s vital not to leak early tries which we have been doing.”
