Ellon miss out in a close game. Ellon failed to take their chances last weekend against a strong Glenrothes team.

A mid table battle went down at the Meadows last Saturday in the pouring rain. Both team sitting 4th and 5th before kick off, led for a few nerves. This showed, as again Ellon let a try in first 2 minutes. Missed chances and lack of closing the attacker down saw Glenrothes sneak in out wide and slot the extras. Glenrothes indiscipline, which was to continue the whole game, started early and a deep penalty was slotted by Ross Grieg.
Ross got a second penalty however Glenrothes score a try in between. Ellon coped well in close contact, but struggled with Glenrothes backs running at them from distance. A quarter of the game in and Glenrothes score again, making use of running backs from a strong scrum, made it 6-19. Unable to get a stable platform from a scrum, Ellon swapped in the older, heavier props, which made an instance difference. A more dominant scrum and punching holes in the Glenrothes defence gave a strong go forward. Nicki Fraser scored in the last minute of the first half with Ross Grieg converting. 13-19 half time.
The Glenrothes indiscipline continued early second half with a penalty to Ellon for high tackles. 16-19. Ellon then attacked hard in the heavy rain, however repeated fouls by Glenrothes, stopped Ellon. The referee eventually issued a yellow card to the Glenrothes flanker, however Ellon failed to take advantage, missing kicks for posts when they had numbers up. Glenrothes then took a second yellow. Still unable to take advantage, Ellon struggled to use the advantage for the next 10 minutes. With 1 minute left Ben Shirron was yellow carded for a first offence out wide on the pitch. From the confusion Glenrothes ran hard and sneaked a final try, stopping Ellon get any points from the day.
The weather didn’t help, but Ellon need to tighten the game play up, be more dominant at the contact, whilst getting closer in the tackle. Plenty for this young team to take from the game.
First XV travel Saturday to bottom of the table Harris in Dundee. A game they will look to take full advantage of.
Youth section had no games last weekend or this weekend coming as the holiday break continues.
Ellon P7 head to Ireland this weekend for a mini tour! Flying to Dublin Friday and back Monday, based at Buccaneers of Athlon, they play in a festival in Galway and then some games at Monavea. Playing 8 games over Saturday and Sunday. Full report next weekend.
