Ellon First XV, off the back of a huge win over their nearest competitors last week, travelled to Inverness to take on Highland Seconds.

The match was played on the new 4G pitch, something Ellon haven’t really played a game on yet. Again it was a battle of the top two teams, however Highland Seconds cannot be promoted to Caledonia 1 due to being a seconds team.

The game started with a try for Highland after 2 minutes. Callum Addy scored after 6 minutes for Ellon. Highland then came back scoring to make it 10-5. Doug Sharp and Brad Fraser both scored to take Ellon into the lead 10-15. Highland then got the next three tries, two converted, to take a convincing 29-15 lead. Andrew Ovenstone then got a try back for Ellon, and a much needed 4 try bonus point, before Highland got a yellow card. Stewart Cruickshank scored quickly with Ali Addy converting. Finally Highland scored the last try and took the game 36 – 27, preventing Ellon getting a losing bonus point.

The other key result was Moray losing to Garioch, which effectively takes Moray out of the equation, while firming placing Garioch in it! Ellon sit top with a game in hand over Moray, while Garioch are 5 points behind and a game in hand over Ellon. If both Ellon and Garioch win all their remaining games with maximum points, they would be drawn on points at the top, with Ellon probably going through on a higher points difference. Ellon play Mackie this Saturday at the Meadows (15:00 KO) before taking on Aberdeen Uni Medics in Aberdeen, and then Ross Sutherland final game of the season at home. A very tight end to the season!

Meanwhile at the weekend it was the first 7s rugby of the season with Ellon hosting and U15 U14 and U13 7s tournament. Saturday saw Ellon (2 teams), Shetland, Muntly, and Deeside compete in a round robin event. Played over 10 pool games and a plate and cup final, Ellon Gold U15 took the Cup final 7-26 against Deeside, while Ellon Burgundy U15 took the Plate final 17-24 against Muntly.
Sunday was the U14 and U13 event.
U13 was 15 pool games and a Cup and Plate Final, with Ellon, Deeside, Granite City, Highland and 2 Muntly teams, competing. The cup was won by Highland against Deeside, after a 15-15 draw, it went to Golden Try! Plate was won by Ellon in a second close game 10-15 against Granite City.
U14 was 10 pool games and a cup and plate final, competed by Ellon (2 teams), Deeside, Granite City and Muntly. Both Ellon teams played the plate final, with Gold winning 45-0. While Muntly took the Cup final 33-5 over Granite City.
Great 7s rugby played by 170 children in fine weather.

In addition to the home game against Mackie for the First XV this weekend, it is a big one for the Youth with it being Caledonia Cup finals Day in St Andrews Sunday, Ellon are represented by U15 in the Plate Final against Stirling County (11:30KO), and U16 also in the Plate final against Dunfermline (13:30KO).
Ellon Juniors travel to Mackie for their annual tournament on Saturday.
