No game for First XV but Youth took on Gordonstoun.

Last Saturday Ellon First XV didn't play as they received a bye into the next round of the Caledonia Bowl. They were due to play Stornoway at Ellon, but the opposition withdrew from the cup competition.
This weekend it is back to the league, with a big local derby. Garioch V Ellon Rugby in Inverurie, with a 15:00 kick off.
The Youth section had full fixtures in the Red Conference, away at Gordonstoun School near Elgin. All games kicked off at 11:00 on the Saturday, as the whole section travelled to the private school.
At U18 Ellon had a number of last minute pull outs and only took 15 in the end. The game started slow for Ellon with Gordonstoun scoring easy tries, making use of their mobile pack and fast wingers. Ellon came back at them in what was a fair performance with no subs, while Gordonstoun emptied the bench for fresh legs. Final score was 42 - 24.
U16 played on a pitch with a heavy slope in one corner. This naturally led to playing the other side, but with good reverses and a great team performance Ellon ran out 14 - 38 winners, with Callum Osterberger the outstanding performance and man of the match.
U15 also had a great game. Dominating from the start they took everything to Gordonstoun. Very physical and used the wingers very well. With two new players in the team playing their first game, it was a good game to start in. Final score 10 - 29.
Ellon U14 played their best performance of the season, finally getting the forward pods working well as they drove up the park. A little too much carry by the 9 and 10, when we should have gone wide and a little too many dropped balls in contact by the forwards, was the difference in this game. Ellon also only had 16 while Gordonstoun a full bench well used. The first third finished 7-3 with Ben Dickie scoring the Ellon try by sniping over from 9. Second third was 7-4 with Dylan Kemp driving over and Dickie converting. Final third Ellon won 5-8 with a dominant possession of the ball and the players finally really got their aggression going. Scores for Finlay Hagen and Adam Fowlie with conversions to Dickie and Ewan Orus. Final score 20 - 15 in what could have been a win, but still a good performance.
At U13 it is always a development game where the score doesn't count. Both team get 2 points for playing and the emphasis is on player development. There was a final score of 13 - 16.
Over all this gave both teams 10 points each as they shared the spoils going to the whole club table.
Next up is Mackie in the Red Conference.
All at Ellon, U18 13:00 KO Saturday, U15&U16 KO 13:00, U14&U13 KO 14:15 Sunday.
Juniors missed their festival this weekend as they were due to play Deeside who had a Scout event and Aberdeen Grammar who are very short of players. Due to low numbers from clubs attending, it was cancelled.

Midweek Ellon Rugby supported Ellon Academy S1/2 mixed in a game away at Turrif. It was played all the way up at Banff. Ellon took 11 players up and played first third 11 v 11. Ellon winning that third 0 - 16. Second third Turriff's went up to 13 players and Ellon won that third 0 - 13. Final third Turriff went up to 15 v 11. Turriff scored two tries but lost that third 8 - 9. Over all final score 8 - 38 to Ellon with 12 tries and 2 conversions (Ewan Orus left his kicking tee in the bus!). Dylan Kemp 2 tries, Ewan Orus 1 try and 2 conversions, Jamie Christie 1 try, Logan Vavangas 1 try, Daniel Ruddy 1 try, Finlay Hagen 6 tries. A good win against higher numbers, but with all Ellon players playing rugby at the club, it made it hard for Turriff who only had 4 club players (Huntly). Game supported by Ellon Rugby and Banff Rugby club. Good NE interaction.
